This article provides details about the DESSA 2 Single Competency Progress Monitoring Forms for grades K–8.

Versions: Six brief behavior rating scales, one for each social and emotional competency measured by the DESSA 2:

  • Self-Awareness
  • Self-Management
  • Social Awareness
  • Relationship Skills
  • Responsible Decision Making
  • Optimistic Thinking

              Items: 8 items per form

              Raters: Educators (teachers and out-of-school time staff)

              Grades: Kindergarten-8th grades

              Languages: English, Spanish (PDF only)

              Reported Scores: Total Score (one score for each competency-specific form)

              Score Ranges: Strength (T-score of 60 and above), Typical (T-score of 41-59), Need for Instruction (T-score of 40 and below)

              Recommended Uses:

              • Progress Monitoring: The forms are intended to monitor growth in one or more specific social and emotional competencies over time. They are most appropriate when educators want to evaluate the effectiveness of instruction, interventions, or supports targeting a particular competency, such as a Tier 2 small group intervention in Relationship Skills.

              Parent/Guardian Use: At this time, the DESSA 2 Single Competency Progress Monitoring Forms do not include a parent/guardian rating form or norms and therefore, should not be used by parents/guardians. If your program would like to involve parents as raters of their child’s social and emotional competence, you may use the full DESSA 2 Parent/Guardian Form.    

              Administration Recommendations: The DESSA 2 Single Competency Progress Monitoring Forms are completed in the same manner as the DESSA 2 measures and require at least four weeks of observation and interaction with the students before they are completed. To evaluate growth over time, administrations should be separated by at least four weeks so that each rating reflects a different sample of student behavior. To allow sufficient time for instruction, practice, and skill development, an interval of six to eight weeks between administrations is recommended. The same form can be administered repeatedly throughout the year.
