Completing DESSA SEIR Ratings

Overview

The DESSA Screener for Externalizing and Internalizing Risk (DESSA SEIR) is a student-completed screener for grades 6-12 that identifies a broad range of social and emotional risks. The DESSA SEIR delivers two scores: Internalizing Risks and Externalizing Risks. These scores are categorized into three ranges: No Concern, Possible Concern, and Concern. To learn more about the scores, watch DESSA SEIR: Overview video and review the DESSA SEIR Technical Manual

The DESSA SEIR must be completed alongside the DESSA Student Self-Report. This enables a “risk and resilience” approach to supporting students’ social, emotional, and behavioral needs that develops protective factors to minimize the impact of potential risks, promoting students’ overall well-being.

Completing the DESSA SEIR

  1. To complete the DESSA SEIR, students log in to the DESSA Student Portal. If this is the first time students have logged into the Student Portal, they will read a Welcome Letter, view a brief video and then click Begin at the bottom of the page.
    1. To learn more about the student login process, see the Login and Student Registration Support Portal article.
  2. Students will begin by completing the DESSA Student Self-Report (DESSA SSR). Once finished, they’ll see a message indicating they’re moving on to the next part of the self-assessment—the DESSA SEIR. They should click Submit to continue.

Reviewing DESSA Student Self-Report Results as a Student

  • After the student completes their assessment, they will be taken to a results page within the Student Portal. This page will display the student’s DESSA Student Self-Report results only.
    • The DESSA SSR results are provided to students because they offer actionable information to better understand their strengths and growth opportunities, and to use that feedback to set skill-building goals for themselves and to learn new skills.
    • The DESSA SEIR results will not be displayed to the students. As a screener, the DESSA SEIR is intended to be used by school teams to identify students who may benefit from additional follow-up or support related to internalizing and externalizing behavior needs.
  • Students can use their SSR results to set goals and engage in a set of activities designed to promote and build their social and emotional skills. The goal of this system is to empower student voice and to give them agency to engage in self-directed social and emotional skill building.
