What is Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)?

SEL is the process of acquiring certain skills that are critical for success in school, in college, and in the workplace.
Examples of social and emotional skills include things like:

    • Personal Responsibility
    • Decision Making
    • Relationship Skills

    What is the assessment called?

The Devereux Student Strengths Assessment (DESSA) is a strength-based behavior rating scale that currently measures social and emotional skills of children in grades K-8. Our goal is to nationally standardize the assessment at the high school level before the end of the year, but we need your help! You can help us by taking the survey yourself (if you're a teacher, staff or parent of a highschooler) or forwarding to someone you know.

    What You Need to Know

    What are we doing?
We are expanding the DESSA for high school students (9th-12th grades) to allow schools and programs to screen, assess, and promote the social and emotional skills of their students.

We are collecting a large, nationally representative sample of DESSA-HSE ratings from teachers and out-of-school time staff, parents, and students across the US to reflect the diversity of high-school aged youth today.

These ratings will be used to create the DESSA-HSE scoring norms, and will enable schools and programs to compare their students’ social and emotional skills to the skills typically demonstrated by students in the US.

    - High School Teachers
    - Out-of-School Professionals who work with
      high school students
