What is the Devereux Student Strengths Assessment (DESSA)?
The DESSA is a strength-based behavior rating scale that currently measures social and emotional skills of children in grades K-8.
What are we doing? We are expanding the DESSA for high school students (9th-12th grades) to allow schools and programs to screen, assess, and promote the social and emotional skills of their students.
We are collecting a large, nationally representative sample of DESSA-HSE ratings from teachers and out-of-school time staff, parents, and students across the US. to reflect the diversity of high-school aged youth today.
These ratings will be used to create the DESSA-HSE scoring norms, and will enable schools and programs to compare their students’ social and emotional skills to the skills typically demonstrated by students in the US.
How can you help? There are two ways you can help. If you are a teacher or staff working with high school students, or are a parent of a high school student, you may complete an anonymous, individual DESSA-HSE rating. OR, if you’d like to bring this initiative to your school on a larger scale, you can sign up for our Program-Wide participation.
